A Medicine Hat man was sentenced to 150 days in jail for stabbing his partner in the thigh with a paring knife.
Due to time served, 28-year-old Ricky Chalifoux will have 79 days remaining, with the judge allowing him to serve that on weekends.
The incident occurred March 9 when Chalifoux was taken to hospital due to mental health issues — his partner left because he was being mean to her, and returned to her residence.
Chalifoux later came to the residence and forced his way in despite the woman wanting him to not enter.
He proceeded to punch her in the back of the head five to six times. At one point he went to the kitchen and brought back a paring knife and told her, “You’re lucky I don’t kill you.”
He stabbed her in the upper thigh — an injury that required stitches, but left her with no permanent or further injury.
When she phoned 911, he snatched her phone away.
Police found Chalifoux in a local bar — drinking in an establishment was against his release conditions.
Chalifoux pled guilty to assault, assault with a weapon and a breach. Alongside the sentence he faces 12 months of probation.
The court heard from the Crown that the victim “very much” did not want charges to go against the accused, and wants contact with him — but it was in the public interest to do so. The couple has a child on the way.
The pair is not allowed to have contact for three months until Chalifoux has taken counselling for domestic violence.
