Man pleads guilty to attempting to run over a crowd of people

A guilty plea to dangerous driving and breaching probation was entered Monday by a man accused of attempting to run over a crowd of people with a truck following a dispute.

The trial for Jamie Vorra, 27, was originally set to run Monday for charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, dangerous driving and breach of probation stemming from an incident which occurred in the early morning of Aug. 10, 2017.

Defence counsel requested the trial be adjourned due to Vorra’s ill health, but the judge stated that the Crown’s case — including testimony from officers and civilian witnesses — should at least proceed.

Following a brief adjournment, guilty pleas were entered to two of the four charges. Sentencing was adjourned to June 25 for a pre-sentencing report to be put together.

Medicine Hat police reported the alleged incident took place last year when theyreceived a complaint that a man had tried to run over a crowd of people following a dispute. According to police, the incident resulted in one person being dragged several feet and suffering minor injuries.

When officers attempted to arrest the man at the front door of a residence, he refused to exit. A warrant for the residence was obtained, and the man was taken into custody without further incident.
