24-year-old Michaela Glasgo announced her intention to run in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding under the United Conservative Party banner Saturday morning in front of front of a large group of family and supporters.
“Today I’m announcing that I am running for the United Conservative Party nomination for the riding of Brooks-Medicine Hat,” she said. “Nominations haven’t officially opened yet, but we’re launching my campaign today — and I’m really just hoping to get a head start and get things moving today.”
While kicking off her campaign, Glasgo said she knew how much work she was going to have to do in the coming year.
“There’s going to be a lot of door knocking,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of person-to-person interaction. We’re going to try and do a lot of events, so we just want people to stay tuned. I think sitting face-to-face with a lot of people, just making connections, will be a lot of help.”
Growing up in Medicine Hat, Glasgo says she is conservative, and that she wants to give the new riding solid leadership.
“I’m a committed conservative and consider myself very principled,” she said. “I want to ensure transparency and accountability going forward from here, and I will hold myself at a high standard. I’m a firm supporter of our oil and gas sector. My parents are small business owners in the oil and gas sector, and their example has been paramount in shaping who I am.
“I’m also a big defender of the family. I think the family is a big part of society, and I think we should advocate for that.”
If elected, Glasgo says her top priority is to ensure smaller government.
“My top priority, if elected of course, is to keep government small so families and communities can grow and prosper.”
Glasgo has spent the last two years working alongside MLA Drew Barnes, a man who says he fully supports her campaign.
“First of all, in the time I’ve known Michaela, which is quite a while, she has shown me that she is very compassionate, totally competent, and knows that conservative values are the best way of forward to strengthen families and communities, and to undo the damage the NDP have done,” he said.
Glasgo says she has learned a lot of Barnes.
“Drew’s influence has been amazing,” she said. “He’s played a bit part in my decision to run, and he has been nothing but supportive. I think having someone like Drew in your corner is a big asset. I think there was a time when conservatives in Alberta didn’t stay true to their values, but Drew was a steady voice during those times.”
