Power and gas rates will fall in Medicine Hat in March, the city utility department announced Thursday.

Posted March commodity rates for natural gas and power will sit at $1.857 per gigajoule and 4.7 cents per kilowatt hour.

Those rates are down from February when gas cost $2.236 and power 4.88 cents.

Medicine Hat sets its local commodity rates for residential and small- to medium-sized commercial customers against an average of regulated rate option power providers and two major gas distributors in Alberta.

The high rate for power posted for March is 5.11 cents offered by Enmax. The low price is 4.515 cents for Epcor’s rural customers.

Comparable prices for gas were $1.981, by Direct Energy, and $1.733, from AltaGas Utilities.

Local large commercial, industrial and street lighting customers on default rate pay the average Alberta gird price in the previous month plus a 2-cent premium. That total price for February was 5.13 cents per kilowatt hour.

The going green surcharge to supplement wind power purchases is 0.5 cents.
