Hundreds of students and job seekers connected with employers and skills training providers at Wednesday’s job fair held at Medicine Hat College.
Kathy Acton of Action Environmental says attendees she spoke to were a good mix and eager to learn about opportunities or seek out advice about qualifications.
“It’s been about 50-50 college students and people in the general community,” said Acton, whose firm provides reclamation services for oil field facilities and other environmental assessments for commercial and industrial projects.
“There’s a good number of people in the trades; maybe they were in the oilfield and are looking for something else, something more stable.”
Her company, which is based in Medicine Hat but has locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, is currently hiring, but most positions require a college diploma specific to the work.
In total, presenters representing other educational institutions, recruitment agencies or businesses filled 29 booths.
