A Medicine Hat man was sentenced to eight months jail for breaking into a residence and stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry.

Harvey Matheson entered guilty pleas Thursday to the one count of break and enter for an incident that took place on June 21, 2017.

According to facts read into court, a woman left her home at 9 a.m., then came home at 11:10 a.m.

Upon arrival, she noticed a bicycle not belonging to her in the backyard.

She entered the house, and upon entering her master bedroom discovered Matheson — who was unknown to her — hiding in the back of a closet. He fled out the rear door and escaped.

Some $4,300 in jewelry was stolen. The forensic unit of the Medicine Hat Police Service was able to pull a fingerprint from an iPad Matheson had touched, linking him to the crime.

Matheson has a “lengthy record” of property crime, the Crown noted during the sentencing, a joint submission between counsel.

Of the 240 days, 33 are considered time served due to pretrial custody. A restitution order was also issued for him to repay the worth of the jewelry.
