Bail was granted Wednesday for a man alleged to have breached release conditions, while being out on bail for allegations of sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl on a city transit bus.
Tyler Stannard of Medicine Hat appeared by closed-circuit TV from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre before the local court for the bail hearing where duty counsel successfully secured his release on $1,000 no-cash bail.
This was despite the Provincial Crown being opposed to Stannard’s release, and seeking to have bail revoked on other earlier charges.
The 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference following an incident on Jan. 18, where a 13-year-old girl said she was fondled and had sexual remarks directed at her while she was riding a city bus. Stannard was held for a bail hearing and subsequently released on a number of conditions.
Stannard was then arrested on Jan. 19 after allegedly entering two people’s backyards and taking items.
When police arrested him, it’s alleged he had on him a knife, which would be a contravention of his release condition.
Stannard has no criminal record. He does have two outstanding charges for theft under $5,000 from a local store.
He has yet to retain counsel, and has yet to apply to legal aid.
His next court appearance is Feb. 28.
