A Medicine Hat man originally charged with kidnapping, robbery and assault instead pled down to unlawful confinement and assault Tuesday over a November 2016 incident.

As part of a joint submission between defence counsel and Crown, Jesse James Summers was sentenced to 18 months on these lesser charges, but will receive time served as he has been in custody for a year.

Defence counsel called the submission a “quid pro quo” as the Crown had issues with the case.

According to facts alleged, on Nov. 15, 2016, Summers and a co-accused went to the residence of the victim to confront him about $1,000 missing that belonged to the co-accused. As they were friends at the time, no break and enter is alleged.

The co-accused punched the victim multiple times, while Summers also punched and kicked the victim multiple times.

The victim attempted to flee but was stopped by the pair.

Summers’ co-accused, Travis Seitz, still faces charges of kidnapping, robbery, common assault, two counts of breach of recognizance and breach of probation.

There is currently a warrant issued for Seitz’s arrest.
