Medicine Hat News Raising money to help African grandmothers facing a crisis is what it’s all about. The Medicine Hat Grannies for Africa are holding their fifth annual fundraising event, at which you can purchase fabric, yarn and more, on March 10 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 504 Second St. SE, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is an entrance fee of $1 at the door. Money raised is in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. It was launched in 2006 and is a Canadian grassroots response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggle to care for millions of children orphaned due to the AIDS/HIV epidemic. So far The Hat Grannies have raised more than $30,000 for African home-based care and support programs. All money raised is sent directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, earmarked for the African Grandmothers Campaign. In preparation for the March 10 event The Hat Grannies are accepting donations of all items related to fibre arts, fabric, yarn, notions, sewing machines etc. Do a little spring cleaning, find the fibre items you need to clear out and donate them by March 1. Call Joanie at 403-526-9005 or Judy at 403-527-7090 to arrange for pick up of your donations. 7
