Despite being granted bail in Medicine Hat, a Winnipeg man charged with robbing multiple banks remains sitting in a Regina jail after being denied bail for charges on the Saskatchewan side of the border.
An adjournment to Feb. 15 was granted Tuesday at the Medicine Hat Provincial Courthouse for 54-year-old Stephen Vogelsang, with Lethbridge-based defence counsel Greg White appearing as agent for the man.
In December, White successfully argued for Vogelsang’s release on the Medicine Hat charges that stem from two bank robberies in October, proposing his client be allowed to return to Manitoba for one week to arrange his affairs. Vogelsang would then return to Alberta and turn himself in for assessment as to whether he is criminally responsible for robbing two Medicine Hat banks on Oct. 19 and 20.
Following Vogelsang’s arrest, Regina police announced they were laying charges against Vogelsang for three bank robberies that occurred in July and October. Saskatoon police announced they were charging Vogelsang for a bank robbery from July 31.
Despite being granted release on the Medicine Hat charges, Vogelsang remained in custody due to the charges in Saskatchewan —and will remain in custody for the time being after being denied release at a Regina bail hearing.
The case has made national news as Vogelsang is better known for his former job as the news director at CTV Winnipeg, and then became a journalism instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg from 2002 until 2011.
