The final tally for money raised during the Corona Tavern’s annual auction to benefit the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund held Thursday evening is $41,475 after all the late donations were tabulated, said Corona Tavern manager Lorraine Schmaltz.

“I am ecstatic with the result,” Schmaltz told the News on Friday. “It really went well. It is just amazing how this community comes together and supports a cause. The highlight of the evening to me is watching people have fun, and enjoy watching them give. Their generosity is just so overwhelming.”

The total raised at the auction this year exceeded last year’s total, and this means more money to help local families struggling through the holiday season, said Schmaltz.

“I know there are families in this city that unfortunately can’t provide a good Christmas to their children, and Christmas is for the kids,” she stated. “This money is not just helping one family, but even if it was helping just one family, it is still a very warm feeling we can give back to these children.”
