There are challenges to living with Type 2 diabetes and Alberta Health Services is holding a three-hour workshop Dec. 13 to help.

The workshop, provided free of charge, is designed to help individuals take control of their diabetes and improve quality of life. It is led by AHS diabetes educators and will include topics such as blood-sugar testing and maintenance, foot care, medication, nutrition, physical activity and its impact on diabetes and travel.

Family members and other caregivers are also encouraged to attend, and participants who have attended previous workshops can register again.

The workshop takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the River Heights Professional Centre, Suite 100, 88 Valleyview Dr. SW. Register by calling 403-529-8969 or toll free 1-866-795-9709. You will need your Alberta health card number to register.

There are about 288,000 Albertans living with diabetes. In the past decade, diabetes rates have nearly doubled. It’s estimated about nine of 10 diabetes cases are Type 2, typically adult onset, says AHS.
