Utilities on the rise this month

Utility rates will rise in Medicine Hat in December, according to rates posted Friday by the city’s utility department.

Natural gas for homes and small- to medium-businesses will cost $2.27 per gigajoule, up 40-cents from November, while electricity edges up about four-10ths of a cent to 3.94 cents per kilowatt hour.

Rates for local customers are based on the average default price offered around the province.

The high rate for gas is $2.303 from Direct Energy Services and the low is $2.214 from AltaGas.

Five of 10 comparable centres see power rates higher then Medicine Hat’s, including Red Deer and Ponoka, where the default rate from Enmax is 4.18 cents.

The City of Lethbridge’s commodity rate was the lowest in Alberta at 3.543 cents.
