The Hat’s Crazy Quilters Lair collected 100 pounds of food for the local food bank at a thank-you event for its members on Nov. 7 at its store.

Attendees were encouraged to bring an item or more for the food bank as admission to the event. Cash donations were also collected.

The event offered members a “substantial discount” on the store’s products, as well as light snacks, refreshments and door prizes, according to Dennis Ulmer, the store’s owner.

He said that the appreciation night was already planned when he decided to make it a charitable event.

“We were having an appreciation night for our members and we just thought it was a good thing for them to donate for the food bank,” said Ulmer.

Marg McIvor from the food bank used to quilt in the studio and she proposed the idea to Ulmer.

“That’s why we decided to give it to them,” he said.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had a thing for our staff members and we had a staff meeting and that was something that was brought up.

“We thought we’d make it a double whammy and do something for one of the causes.”
