Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter is hosting a pet walk Saturday to raise awareness of the effects family violence can have on animals. Judges can consider pets when making an Emergency Protection Order, according to the province’s Protection Against Family Violence Act. Often a pet’s safety serves as a barrier to leaving an abusive relationship, which is what the MHWS wants to draw attention to with the event. Donations will also be taken for the Medicine Hat SPCA. The types of donations the SPCA is looking for can be found online at http://www.medhatspca.ca/support/wish-list. The walk begins at 1 p.m. at Kin Coulee Park’s toboggan hill and is part of Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. Participants will walk through the park as a group, where they will gather for a brief talk and group picture at the “Phoenix Safe House” brick mural. Attendees are encouraged to dress themselves and their pets in purple for the walk.
