South Railway Street project has to finish in spring

Work on South Railway Street — the largest road construction project in the city this year — will be shut down and completed in early 2018, officials announced Wednesday.

Crews have been working in phases since spring to replace sewer and water lines as well as rebuild the aging road in one of Medicine Hat’s most complicated traffic corridors.

The announcement comes as the year’s first expected stretch of sub-zero temperatures sets in this week.

“The majority of construction work has been completed,” the release said. “The decision is based on weather, materials availability and traffic safety, as proceeding with construction beyond the end of October is risky due to the possibility of freeze-up.”

Officials told the News this fall that finishing final stages and perhaps top-lift paving might not be started in 2017.

Officials with the municipal works department stated Wednesday that completing the final phase, from the Allowance Avenue overpass to Kingsway Avenue, will be done next spring.

The release also stated that contractor, MJB Enterprises, had done a good job of minimizing disruption during the complex work.
