Winter is coming: Natural gas goes up, electricity goes down

The cost of gas for heating homes and businesses will rise in November, while power prices will fall, according to rates published on Wednesday by the City of Medicine Hat utility department.

Gas will sit at $1.87 per gigajoule this month, up 27 cents compared to October. Local power will cost 3.55-cents per kilowatt hour, marking of drop of about one-10th of a penny.

Rates in Medicine Hat are set at the provincial average of default rates.

Six of 10 comparable centres will see higher power prices than those offered locally, while four are below. The highest rate offered is 3.758-cents in Red Deer and Ponoka. The low price is 3.287-cents in the Crowsnest Pass.

Three major gas distributors show prices ranging from $1.675 per gigajoule from AltaGas to $2.10 from Gas Alberta Inc.

Local residential and small- to medium-sized businesses have the same rate power rate.

Large-scale customers without a contract pay a default rate based on the Alberta pool average from the previous month plus a premium. In Medicine Hat that rate is 4.05 cents for November.
