Police are investigating “certain suspicious circumstances” in Friday’s Bridge Street fire that led to a woman’s hospitalization.

“There was an adult female who removed herself from the residence and did have some significant burns to her,” said MHPS S-Sgt. Mark Fentiman.

“We’ve got some investigating to do if something was done purposefully or not.”

The blaze occurred on the 1100 block of Bridge Street in the Flats, next door to a house recently closed down due to drug-related activity.

Police blocked off the street in response to the fire, which was extinguished by firefighters.

Capt. Kevin Heinrich with the Medicine Hat Fire Department said they too were investigating.

“The police are still on scene, the fire investigators (are) on scene, trying to determine what the cause of it was,” he said around 7 p.m.

Further details on the injured woman’s condition were not known by press time.
