A moose was on the loose in Redcliff on Thursday morning.
“My understanding is that it’s a female moose that went down in the coulee,” said Redcliff RCMP S-Sgt. Sean Maxwell.
“People are just being advised to stay clear of it and especially keep their dogs clear of it.”
The police received no complaints about the moose from members of the public, added Maxwell.
Still, it’s unusual for the species to show up in town.
“It’s not something we normally get called to,” said Cpl. Gord Yetman.
Police were informed of the moose sighting by Barry Steier, the town’s bylaw officer, around 9 or 10 a.m., Yetman said.
Steier said the moose appeared to be four years old.
“It didn’t even seem like it bothered with the dogs that were in the area,” said Steier.
Yetman similarly stressed the animal’s non-threatening disposition.
“Shortly after it emerged and was seen it laid down and wasn’t budging. It wasn’t making any attempts to go anywhere,” he said.
“It doesn’t look like at any point in time that it posed a hazard to anybody.”
The moose is likely located between Redcliff and Medicine Hat currently, said Steier.
“It’s their natural habitat down there,” he said.
