Fire meeting in Acadia Valley tonight

A public “debriefing” is planned tonight for residents of Acadia Valley after prairie fire ripped through the surrounding area on Oct. 17.

Officials say fire and municipal personnel will be on hand at the Acadia Valley Community hall to answer questions and run through the emergency that burned 12,000 acres of farmland, destroyed several houses and buildings, and killed about 200 cattle.

Brent Williams, manager of the MD of Acadia Valley says the event will provide an overview and “the steps we are taking with the Government of Alberta and ATCO Electric to seek support for affected landowners.”

The fire burned out of control in winds reaching 120 km/h. The probable cause is sparks from a broken transmission pole.

All affected residents are encouraged to attend the event, which begins at 7 p.m.
