Police have arrested one man from Winnipeg for the robberies at two city banks within an 18-hour period last week.
Police announced the arrest on Saturday, saying a 53-year-old Stephen Vogelsang was taken into custody without incident.
The MHPS would not say whether Vogelsang used a weapon during either of the robberies.
Staff Sgt. Jason Graham said the MHPS was able to locate Vogelsang at a hotel in the city.
“I’m not prepared to say which hotel we found him at, but we did not get a tip. This was just good, old-fashioned police work. The officers did a good job at tracking him down quickly,” he said.
As reported in Saturday’s News on Oct. 19 the 13th Avenue RBC was robbed at about 6:50 p.m. when a man in a red and black plaid jacket approached tellers, handing them a note which demanded money. After receiving some, he then departed the scene in an older model dark-coloured truck southbound on 13th Avenue SE.
The suspect did the same thing at the 3215 Dunmore Road Bank of Montreal branch on Oct. 20 at 11:40 a.m., walking up to the tellers and demanding the money — this time heading out on foot through the Cuyler area.
Police released a photo and description of the suspect, and requested the public’s assistance in identifying him
