Medicine Hat News The jobless rate in southern Alberta continues to run below 2016 levels and remains the lowest in the province despite a small increase from the month before. The unemployment rate for September sat at 5.1 per cent for the Medicine Hat-Lethbridge region, down from 6.7 per cent one year ago, but up from 4.5 per cent in August. Alberta’s overhall unemployment rate fell to 7.9 per cent, down from 8.7 in 2016 and also 0.2 per cent below the previous month. The new number compares to the national average of 6.2 per cent. Red Deer showed the biggest decline year over year. Its 5.7 per cent rate is down three percentage points over 12 months. The rate in Wood Buffalo (Fort. McMurray) dropped by two points to sit at 7.3 per cent. Calgary’s rate fell to 8.6 per cent, while Edmonton’s rose to 8.7, up 0.7 per cent. 7
