Medicine Hat police arrested a 26-year-old man over an attempted carjacking.

Police report that during the evening of Oct. 3, a man was stopped in front of a residence on Second Street NE, and was approached by a man who asked for a ride.

When the driver refused, the other man brandished what appeared to be a pistol and demanded the driver get out of the vehicle.

The motorist then drove away quickly and no injuries resulted.

Medicine Hat police quickly located the male suspect, and successfully negotiated with the man so he was arrested safely and without incident. After being taken into custody, a pellet gun handgun was located on the suspect.

Police have not yet released the name of the man but he has been charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property.
