The Redcliff Library is hosting a celebration for its 50th anniversary on Oct. 14, with speakers, refreshments and activities for kids.
“It’s going to be pretty much a come-and-go event,” said library manager Tracy Weinrauch. “There will be face painting for the kids. We’ll have cupcakes, coffee, tea (and) drinks.
“It’s a chance to mingle and hopefully talk to some previous board members.”
There will also be speakers, including Redcliff Mayor Ernie Reimer and board chair Brian Lowery.
Weinrauch has worked at the library for the past 10 years, eight of which she’s spent as manager.
She said time spent with coworkers and the library’s renovations are the fondest memories of her tenure.
“We went through a big renovation in the spring of 2008. That was a big deal. We just renovated our meeting room this past August.
“But I think the people that I work with are the top thing,” said Weinrauch.
The event is being planned by the library board’s anniversary committee.
Dianne Smith, who sits on the library board, said the event will also include photographs from when the current location was built.
“We’ve got a board set up with all the pictures from when we started building, because this building was built in 1967,” she said. “We went to the museum and got a lot of pictures from way back.”
Prior to 1967, the library was where the daycare centre on Broadway Avenue is located.
Smith said 50 years is a landmark occasion.
“I’m having a 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, so I think that’s a big thing for 50 years of our library to be still going, especially in this technology age.
“We do more than just books. We have technology and people just come in. A library, especially for a small town, is kind of a meeting place.”
