The Medicine Hat Musical Theatre team celebrated the 10th anniversary of its home, The Playhouse, Saturday evening by holding its first-ever gala event.

Land was originally purchased for the building in 2007, and the name, The Playhouse, was decided upon. Over the 10 years the MHMT group has been fueled by volunteers such as Lyn Weisgerber, who was in charge of planning the 10-year celebration.

“We’re celebrating everything that has happened at the Playhouse,” she said. “This is where we do everything. We rehearse here. We do shows here. We even have a bar here. This was originally built just as a place to practice. We had our one show every year at the Esplanade, and we would do our rehearsals at the Playhouse. As the theatre got more equipped with better seating and what not, we started doing shows at the Playhouse. We’re now up to five shows every year and we even sell season tickets.”

Saturday’s show featured songs from past performances put on by the group, as a way of showcasing some of the top performances put on by MHMT at the Playhouse.

“Medicine Hat really does enjoy the fine arts,” said Weisgerber. “We have so many talented people in our community and I think the growth in popularity of our shows is because of that. I think people really recognize the time and effort that goes into these shows.”

Weisgerber says that the MHMT group would not have had the success it has had without the support of its volunteers.

“Everyone is a volunteer,” she said. “No one gets paid anything here. Whenever something needs to get painted or fixed, it’s someone doing it on their own time. We have future plans to maybe expand the Playhouse, but I think we’re going to be staying here. We have had so many people donate time and effort into this building — it is a home for us.”
