Medicine Hat hair and beauty student Phaedra Goett recently beat out 350 other students in Alberta for the right to represent One Beauty Academy at the Global Hair Olympics in Paris.
Goett is a graduate of Hat High and placed second at the Regional Skills Competition last year to win a scholarship to attend One Beauty.
Goett only had 12 hours to prepare for the timed competition where she was given the same picture of elaborate hairstyle others in the L’OrĂ©al sponsored competition received. Goett won because she was able to render the hairstyle, in the estimation of the judge, the best of all entrants.
“I was thrown in last minute pretty much,” recalls Goett. “It was very intricate and very particular. There were a lot of fine-tuning and details to work through.”
Goett says she doesn’t expect to win when she heads to Paris for the beginning of the three-day Global Hair Olympics this week, but she intends to fully immerse herself in the experience.
“I don’t really know what to expect so I am nervous,” she admits. “I acknowledge the fact I am probably the youngest one there with the least amount of training. And it’s just a really good opportunity. I am excited to have the opportunity to go.”
Goett says the upside, win or lose, will be getting a chance to visit Paris with her mom.
“We are both really excited about it,” confirms Goett. “I think we want to do a lot of street wandering and looking at all there is, not so much of the touristy side of things.”
Goett is also thankful to One Beauty Academy for all the opportunities she has been given so early in her career.
“Coming to One Beauty has been awesome,” she says. “I totally lucked out with this competition happening when it did.”
