Medicine Hat News A woman who successfully appealed her conviction on second-degree murder charges in Medicine Hat now faces a 21-month sentence in Saskatchewan. Connie Oakes was sentenced on Aug. 24 at the provincial courthouse in Swift Current to 18 months for aggravated assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats in connection to a stabbing that took place in April at a Maple Creek residence. An additional 90 days was added to the sentence for an unrelated assault. RCMP reported that a male stabbing victim was brought to the hospital around 7 p.m. on April 5. Police later arrested and charged Oakes, 52, and Ricky Rockthunder, 35. Oakes pled guilty April 20 to the charges, with sentencing delayed until Aug. 24. Oakes, who hails from Nekaneet First Nation, was convicted in 2013 of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Casey Armstrong. This conviction was later successfully appealed, with Oakes released from custody in April 2016, and the Crown issuing a stay of proceedings over the charge. Rockthunder’s next court appearance is Sept. 13. — with files from Maple Creek News 10
