City committee to look at proposal to increase Parkview Drive speed limit

A city committee today will consider a new plan to raise some speed limits thoughout the city.

Often a gripe among motorists in the city, Parkview Drive was built to accommodate traffic at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour when it came into service four years ago, but had the limit set at 50 km/h.

After collecting public feedback this spring, planners are recommending to the development and infrastructure committee that the rate increase to 70 km/h between 11th Avenue and 20th Street NE.

Today’s afternoon meeting will also consider a contract extension with Rameco, which operates Invest Medicine Hat as the city’s economic development wing.

The original 30-month contract is set to expire at the end of August, and administrators suggest a 16-month extension at a cost of $539,000.

As well, after years of negotiations, the city is prepared to vote on a final agreement with the federal government to take over complete zoning authority over lands surrounding the Medicine Hat Regional Airport. First discussed years ago, such an agreement was described at that time as a first of its kind in the nation.
