Man arrested for weekend homicide

A 26-year-old man is in custody after a woman’s body was found at a house on the 800 block of Third St. S.E. Saturday night.

The man was arrested for murder, said Insp. Brent Secondiak at a press conference Sunday at the Medicine Hat Police station, and more details will be released once formal charges have been laid.

Police believe the man and deceased woman were known to each other, but as of yet do not know the exact nature of their relationship.

Police are also investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the homicide, said Secondiak.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday. The victim has not yet been positively identified.

Search and rescue personnel were at the scene and surrounding area to search for evidence throughout Sunday, while police continue to investigate.

This is the second homicide this month in Medicine Hat, with two men charged with second degree murder following an incident last weekend. It’s the third homicide this year in the city.
