Sire Jeremy Williamson hopes to initiate change as a member of the Medicine Hat Public School Board.

Williamson, who chooses to be addressed as Sire, has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, with a background in information technology and software engineering. Williamson’s children were enrolled in public school until COVID started and they opted to home school.

“I’d like to see them go back to the schools in the Medicine Hat Public School Division,” said Williamson. “I’d like to see some normalcy brought back first.”

Williamson served as the chairman of the Medicine Hat Christian School council and has travelled to India and Nigeria on missions with Voice of the Martyrs and the Christian Reformed World Missions.

Williamson explained main components of his platform.

“No. 1 is the secrecy and lack of transparency in the district. I would like to see the district return to behaving and acting more like public servants than as overseers of the district.”

Williamson would also like to see changes to COVID measures. Williamson says individuals should not feel forced into getting vaccinated to keep their job or play sports, and also claims masks hurt a child’s ability to learn.

“I don’t believe that masks are helpful for the children, particularly the younger ages,” Williamson says. “There’s been decades of instruction and learning for the teachers that masking is not good for learning to read and write, because they can’t see the enunciations that the teacher makes, they can’t see facial expressions, it’s not good for their social interactions and it creates an atmosphere of fear … so I believe that it’s detrimental to the development of the children.”

“I’m not in it for power, I’m not in it for social status, I don’t care about my social status, I don’t care about being in control, and I’m not in it for the money because it’s clearly not a money situation for a trustee. I’m in it for the kids, I want to do what’s best for the kids. I want to see the children thrive and become successful members of society and be able to pass on that knowledge to their children as well.”
