Motz sounds off over senate appointment

By Medicine Hat News on August 5, 2021.

Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner MP Glen Motz says one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent Senate nominations is a “clear and flagrant disregard of the will of Albertans.”

Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen was appointed to represent Alberta in the Senate last week after being recommended by the independent advisory board for Senate appointments, and chosen using a merit-based process open to all Canadians. This is despite the fact that Alberta will be holding a Senate election in conjunction with municipal elections this October, says Motz.

“These criticisms are not a personal attack against Ms. Sorensen, nor an attempt to undermine her experience or qualifications, but rather a criticism against how the Prime Minister chose to circumvent Alberta’s wishes,” said Motz says in a Tuesday press release.

In response, Motz has sent a letter to Trudeau to “demand that Albertans’ democratic choice be respected,” according to the release.

The release adds that Trudeau has received requests from Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O’Toole, the Alberta provincial government and “many other prominent Albertans” asking to wait until after the fall Senate election.
