The official definition of a volunteer is considered to be: Taking part in an activity for no financial gain to benefit another person or organization.

The reason we volunteer at the Esplanade is as varied as the number of people on the roster. Some volunteer to give back to the community, to some it’s a chance to get out and socialize, some it’s to take in the latest show and possibly for some it’s to escape humdrum household chores. Whatever the reason it’s a fun way to help out and to feel needed and appreciated.

Our black and white uniforms are easily recognized. You may have noticed the “Parade of the Penguins” descending the main staircase preceding every theatre show. That’s us, we are there to check and scan your tickets, assist you in finding your seat and to be knowledgeable and helpful in the event of an emergency.

Many of us spend countless hours assisting the education department. We promote the local history and the amazing artistic talents of the City of Medicine Hat, leading school groups, local and visiting guests through the ever changing galleries, museum and archives. Working with the children’s art programs is another opportunity to help out. It is impossible to describe briefly the many activities taking place in this beautiful building, all of which require volunteer participation.

The staff at the Esplanade treat the volunteers with respect and friendship and provide us with the much appreciated underground parking, treats and snack in the volunteer lounge and the opportunity to enjoy exhibition, theatre shows and concerts.

Sometimes it’s been a rough day, and with a sinking feeling you realize you have an evening volunteer shift. From the moment you step off the elevator, you return the welcoming smiles, hear the laughter and chatter, listen to a few silly jokes and the troubles of the day start to slide away. It’s a good feeling to say “good night” to the happily smiling guests after a wonderful performance. That’s our bonus for working the show!

Our definition of a volunteer is one who donates their time and receives so much in return.

Joy Thomson is an Esplanade Volunteer.
