Library Chat: Library is hopping to start fall

By Ken Feser on September 27, 2019.

There is lots happening at Medicine Hat Public Library right now. Painting has started in the Kinsmen Children’s Library in preparation for the Co-op Developmental Playspace that is coming in January. Our new colour scheme is very subdued, just two shades of grey before some colour accents are added later, but we are still excited by the progress. We’ve decided that a new wall is necessary to contain noise and control access to the play structure. That will come next followed by resilient flooring that will make the structure safe.

We had a surprise donation of a beautiful play house plus a puppet stage and puppets. Thank you Debby Furman. The play house is set up in a sunny corner and is ready for tiny tenants; the puppets and stage will be coming soon.

Alberta Culture Days start today (Sept. 27) and the library is hosting a reception for local artist Kai Hodgson from 7-9 p.m. We are also having a grand opening tonight for our outdoor ping pong table. Come visit and you may get the chance to invent a new version of the sport suitable for the Winter Olympics (snow pong or ice pong, too early to tell yet).

Tomorrow (Sept. 28) is Pecha Kucha night. This insanely popular program involves slide presentations with a twist; there are exactly 20 photo slides in each presentation with precisely twenty seconds of commentary each. It takes place on the Main Stage in the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre. You can expect the presenters to be passionate and interesting. A donation of $5 is suggested, with a cash bar and snacks available.

Finally, Oct. 5 is Methanex Library Card Sign-up Day. Methanex has generously sponsored the event and the first 500 new or renewed library cards will be free. Our adult cards only cost $5 but it’s always good to economize, right? There will be lots of activities in the library such as games, virtual reality and crafts, so come visit, save some money and have some fun.

If you visit us at any of these events, keep an eye out for our 50/50 tickets. You can support us by buying tickets and you will have a chance to win up to $10,000.
