A special concert for Mother’s Day is scheduled for Sunday at Medicine Hat College.

The event starts at 2:30 p.m. and it will feature the Medicine Hat Community Orchestra, the Medicine Hat High School Junior Orchestra, Bow Head Ensembles and other acts.

“It’s something we do every year and we have several groups playing,” said Ken Blair, who plays flute in the community orchestra. “The largest group will be the community orchestra and one of the things that we like to emphasize is that this is the closest thing we have in Medicine Hat to a symphony orchestra.

“It’s going to be a really great show and it’s something fun to do on Mother’s Day.”

The community orchestra will be playing three large pieces and each group will display a wide range of instruments and music.

“The show is going to be quite entertaining for music loves,” said Blair. “I think it will be about an hour and a half long and it’s free admission.

“We’re asking people to bring a donation for the food bank if they’re able to.”

The event will have first-come, first-served seating at the theatre and Blair says he is hoping to see plenty of Hatters out for the day.

“In the past I don’t think people have known about this event,” he said. “It’s really like a symphony and people never know about.

“We do this every year and we also have a Christmas concert.”

Blair says there will be a lot of talent on display Sunday.

“There’s a wide range of community members performing and we all have other jobs and things we do – we do this because we love music,” he said. “There’s going to be a full range of instrumentation on display and there will be a lot of music to be enjoyed.”
