Dancers from Medicine Hat and area have the opportunity to join Jeunesse Classique Ballet dancers on stage this December.

The Calgary-based group returns for its third production of the Christmas classic “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 1-2 at the Esplanade. As in years past the JCB is holding open auditions for locals to take on some of the roles. They are looking to cast as many as 50 local dancers.

Auditions will be held at Medicine Hat College, Studio A Room CC121, on Sept. 22-23. Audition times are 1-1:45 p.m. (ages 5-7), from 2-3 p.m. (ages 8-12) and 3:30-5 p.m. (ages 13 and up). Dancers need to attend only one session and there is an audition fee of $30. For more information visit jcbs.ca/audition-info

The majority of the roles are for younger dancers but in years past local dancers have played the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy, The Cavalier, The Nutcracker Prince, Snow Queen and more.

Michael McCreadie, chair of the Jeunesse Classique Ballet Society, says “the integration of the touring cast with the local cast has been one of the most rewarding and challenging components” of their productions.
