Alumni of the Medicine Hat College Conservatory will be looking Through the Opera Glass on May 12.

Seventeen performers will be featured at the 7:30 p.m. show at Fifth Avenue Memorial Church and all of them are current or former students of local voice programs. Many of the students are currently at post-secondary schools preparing for wherever their musical careers will take them.

The gala is the creation of Susan Supeene, a voice instructor at the conservatory.

“My hope for the reception of this concert is that it will introduce the community to the emotional and artistic breadth of opera. Opera is a cultural time machine that opens doors into every possible human drama; and gains its unique power through its union with the world’s most beautiful music,” Supeene told the Medicine Hat College website.

The gala is not only about showcasing local talent. Donations can be made to memorial scholarships named for Adele Armstrong and Glen Harder, who Supeene calls giants in the music community. A portion of the ticket sales will also be donated to the scholarships.

Performing at the gala will be Sarah Heckbert, Jacqueline Arthur, Britt Booth, Edmund Camphor, Seanachie Clark, Keirdon Dick, Sydney Frelick, Hannah Nickel, Laura McKay, Flannery Salkeld, Faustina Schmid, Samantha Scott, Caleigh Seitz, Christy Sparrow, Olwyn Supeene, Hunter Semrau, and Jocelyn Walters with accompaniment by Elaine Dobek Shandro and Constantine Shandro.

Tickets, $25 for adults and $15 for students, plus service charge and GST, are available http://www.tixx.ca, by calling 403-502-8777 or in person at the Esplanade box office or the Medicine Hat Mall customer service desk.
