Rock Ramblings: Spring is here, so let’s party

By Medicine Hat News on March 22, 2018.

While it may not seem like it just yet, spring is officially here. I know I’m not alone in thinking that this winter felt like one of the longest ever in Medicine Hat. In fact, the month of February was the Gas City’s coldest in the past 25 years. While there’s still snow piled high on our lawns the signs of spring are slowly starting to show. The doggie landmines are appearing, freshly washed vehicles are avoiding massive puddles and drivers are dodging potholes.

With warmer temperatures around the corner, I figured it would be a good opportunity to look forward to some of the best things about spring. At the top of my list is being able to get rid of our heavy winter parkas in exchange for a light jacket or hoodie. Spring temperatures are just like baby bear’s porridge — not too hot, not too cold.

Another bonus to spring is the extra daylight. Have you noticed how much happier people are compared to a month ago? Health experts say that people generally feel happier, more energetic and have lower sickness rates with the longer and brighter days. Not only that, the extra sunlight helps you sleep better at night and will help you feel less stressed.

I’ve also been enjoying being able to open up the windows at night. There is nothing better than sleeping with the fresh air?especially when it starts to rain. A spring rainfall is one of my favourite smells. (Side note: Do you know how many rock and roll songs have rain in the title? You could probably make your own “rain” playlist with tracks including Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain,” Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” and Garbage’s “I’m Only Happy When it Rains” just to name a few).

One more reason to love the season of daffodils and tulips is that it’s concert season! There are some many awesome rock shows coming to southeast Alberta over the next couple of months. It all starts with the latest Classic Albums Live show performing Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” tomorrow night at the Esplanade. Next month 105.3 ROCK is proud to present the sold-out Sloan show at the Silver Buckle on April 13.

If you don’t mind a bit of a drive there are some great rock shows down the Crowsnest Highway in Lethbridge this spring. Shinedown will play the Enmax Centre April 4 along with special guests In This Moment, One Bad Son and 10 years. George Thorogood and the Destroyers are also hitting up the Enmax Centre Saturday May 5. Maybe enjoy a little bourbon, scotch and beer considering it’s a weekend show?!

In Calgary, the Steve Miller Band and Peter Frampton make a stop at the Saddledome April 20. Plus, there’s the Papa Roach show at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino Wednesday May 2.

So while you are dodging potholes or enjoying a spring BBQ on your back deck keep it locked to 105.3 ROCK for all your concert details. As Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party!”

Cassie Donnelly is the morning show co-host at 105.3 ROCK. You can reach her on twitter @cass_1053rock.
