Medalta is dishing out artistic talent with its annual international exhibition that runs until Jan. 24.

“Every year, Medalta hosts an international exhibition, and we put out a call to artists all over the world who are interested in submitting work based around a theme,” said Safira Lachapelle, curator with Medalta.

This year’s theme is “Dish” — continuing the trend from the exhibit’s past themes of spoons, cups and celebratory drinking vessels.

Acting as a juror for the exhibit was Julia Galloway.

“(Galloway) is a very well-respected and well known ceramic artist, instructor, educator,” said Lachapelle, and Galloway pared down the number of works submitted to the show to just over 130 works from 70 artists.

The artists are primarily from Canada — coast to coast —as well as the United States, said Lachapelle, but Scotland, Singapore and South Korea are also represented.

“It’s a real survey in what’s going on in contemporary ceramics. Everybody had a different take on what that dish could be — everyone has such different aesthetics and styles and things that they’re drawn to. There’s a real mix brought together by that loose theme of dish,” she said.

Sometimes purchasing art can be a “little bit intimidating,” said Lachapelle, but when it comes to ceramics and this show, the pieces are functional and can become a part of your life, and reflect who you are.

All works in the exhibition are for sale and can be purchased online at http://www.medalta.org/dish or in person during regular business hours, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The thing that’s great about this exhibition is, for people who are Christmas shopping, all the works are available in time for Christmas, so if you do want to come down before Christmas, pick up a work you can take it right off the shelf, wrap it up, and give it away as a gift,” said Lachapelle.
