Rock Ramblings: Arkells ‘Knocking at the Door’ chosen best rock song of the summer of ’17

By Medicine Hat News on August 31, 2017.

We’ve reached the point in the summer where the leaves start changing colour, the air gets a bit colder and the classic pumpkin spice flavour assaults citizens every waking second (seriously, there’s no break). But for us lovers of rock it has become time to count down the 10 greatest hits of the summer, according to America’s Music Charts. Buckle up, kidsÉ let’s roll.

10. GREEN DAY — REVOLUTION RADIO

We radio people love spinning this track. Not only is it catchy and relatable to us, but it feels like classic Green Day — and we can’t get enough of it. Keep it coming, Green Day!

9. ROYAL BLOOD — LIGHTS OUT

Picture it, you’re driving down the road, this single comes on your radio, you roll down your window and crank it up. Suddenly, you’re the coolest person on the street! This song embodies exactly what 2017 rock is. Traditional, grungy but still current and so tight. This will be on your charts for a long time.

8. THE GLORIOUS SONS — EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT

Wow! This has to be my favourite song released in 2017. It is tender with deep and meaningful lyrics. When this hit comes on, everyone in the room stops to listen to it. If you want to see it live, The Glorious Sons will be in the Gas City on Nov. 7. Don’t miss out!

7. RISE AGAINST — THE VIOLENCE

It has been a while since we’ve had a new release from Rise Against and it was well worth the wait. This was a single from their album “Wolves,” released on June 9. This track gives you chills, and deserves its spot on the chart.

6. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 — FREEZE ME

I find that this has a similar feel to the new Rise Against track. But unique to Death From Above 1979, this is another song that has defined the 2017 music scene so far. Not only does it have a great beat and slick lyrics but it also makes you feel like you’re in a concert hall with them watching it live every time. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t help but get sucked in every time I hear it.

5. HEADSTONES — DEVIL’S ON FIRE

This spot is so well deserved for the Headstones. If you want to catch them live, you can catch them at the Esplanade on Nov. 14.

4. HIGHWAY TUNE — GRETA VAN FLEET

They’ve been touring around lately but had time to release this great single. Earning fourth place this summer, it’s ‘Highway Tune’.

3. THE WAY YOU USED TO DO — QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

This single is unreal. You can hear it often on 105.3 Rock as it deserves to be heard and turned up loud! You never want to miss this.

2. RUN — FOO FIGHTERS

It was largely argued that this would come in as the song of the summer. As stated in a previous column by morning show host, Cassie, we at 105.3 Rock thought they were sure to take the cake. But they wound up in the No. 2 spot.

1. KNOCKING AT THE DOOR — ARKELLS

This one really shook things up for Canadian alt rock band, Arkells. It is so against the grain of their classic style but perhaps because of its originality, it earned the No. 1 spot on the charts for the summer. Worth a listen, you won’t be disappointed!

You can catch all of these and so much more on 105.3 Rock and if you don’t have a radio, stream us on the Radio Player Canada app.

Now let’s see what rock music holds for the winter!

You can hear Melissa Thomas evenings and early Sunday before Garner Andrews on 105.3 ROCK and 1053rock.ca
