An Edmonton country singer is using her talents to raise money and awareness for crisis shelters across the province.

In Medicine Hat, Andrea Nixon will perform at Cafe Verve from noon to 2 p.m. on Aug. 15. Admission is by donation and the event will also feature a guest speaker addressing domestic violence issues and survivor stories being read.

Following the performance Nixon will be at Musasa/Phoenix Safe House from 4-6 p.m. to meet staff and residents and discuss immediate needs.

Nixon has called this the #SirenStories Tour, which came from the song “Waiting for Sirens” on her new album “Diary of a Housewife.” According to a news release, Nixon, a teacher, “has worked on the frontline with children in violent homes and wrote the song as a means of coping with the helplessness she felt trying to provide them with hope for a brighter future.”

As Nixon visits 10 shelters across Alberta she’ll be producing a video series with frontline workers and survivors telling their stories.
