Sarah Polley to receive director prize at Palm Springs International Film Awards

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Toronto director-writer Sarah Polley will receive the director of the year honourat the Palm Springs International Film Awards.

The award will be presented to the “Women Talking” director at a ceremony next year in California.

Adapted from Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, “Women Talking” tells the story of a remote religious community grappling with how to respond to a serial problem of sexual abuse.

The cast includes Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, and Frances McDormand.

The film alsotook home the People’s Choice Award at the Windsor International Film Festival earlier this month.

In a release, the Palm Springs International Film Society praised Polley for “taking us on a cinematic journey filled with raw emotions and performances.”

Former recipients of the director of the year award Palm Springs include Steve McQueen for “12 Years a Slave,”Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland.”

The awards will take place Jan. 5 at the start of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which runs through 16.

“Women Talking” is slated to hit Canadian theatres next month.
