With the fall session of Parliament now underway, Conservatives will continue to challenge the Liberals on what is going wrong, expose what is hidden, and propose what is in Canada’s national interest. Conservatives will relentlessly hold Prime Minister Carney to account because Canadians deserve better than his lofty, unfulfilled campaign promises that fooled voters in the spring. His promise to ‘negotiate a win’ with the U.S. is so far a bust. The ‘spending less’ mantra he repeatedly pledged is not happening as expenditures are now up 8% without even tabling a budget. As for the promise to have the fastest-growing economy in the G7 well, Canada is now recognized as the fastest shrinking economy in the G7. Despite all the promises, Canadians are left reeling as every previous crisis has worsened: cost-of-living, job-loss, crime and immigration. Fortunately, Conservatives are prepared to propose solutions to these Liberal created problems. Conservatives will introduce legislation to reverse the escalating cost-of-living crisis that has produced the worst household debt, the highest housing costs and the second highest unemployment in the G7. With more than 106,000 Canadians losing their jobs in the last two months alone and youth unemployment the worst in nearly 30 years, action to address this crisis is long overdue. The Liberal soft-on-crime laws, which have allowed violent, repeat criminals to be repeatedly released on bail, must be repealed. Conservatives will introduce the Jail Not Bail Act to address public safety concerns and rebalance our justice system by putting law-abiding citizens first. Since 2015, reckless Liberal policies have resulted in a 55% increase in violent crime, firearm crimes are up 130%, extortion has skyrocketed by 330% across Canada, sexual assaults are up 76% and homicides are up 29%. Our proposed Bill will repeal the Liberal “Principle of Restraint” and direct that the primary consideration be the protection and safety of the public. A new ‘Major Offences’ category, with reverse onus bail conditions for firearm, sexual assaults, kidnapping, human trafficking, home invasion, robbery, extortion, arson and assault charges will be introduced. Bail laws will be strengthened by mandating that judges consider an accused’s full criminal history, preventing anyone convicted of a major offence in the last 10 years, while also on bail, from getting released on bail again. Securing Canada’s borders by reducing immigration to a more manageable level, will help address job loss, along with the acute housing and healthcare crisis. Liberal immigration intake targets for 2025 have already far exceeded their own caps, by hundreds of thousands, with pending applications piling up in the queue. These numbers are not sustainable, forcing a hard look at how Canada manages immigration. Canadians want a safe and affordable country where all can prosper, like we had before this Liberal government. The Conservative ‘Canadian Sovereignty Act’ will open our country for business, cut taxes and government approval times on building value-added infrastructure. Our goal is to bring down costs, limit immigration, keep criminals behind bars, and deliver good paying jobs. Glen Motz is the MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner 13
