MLA Report: Securing our water future: Mapping southern Alberta’s groundwater resources

By Justin Wright on February 19, 2025.

As your MLA and chair of the Alberta Water Advisory Committee, I’m excited to share a significant development in our ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable water management for our region. Our government has recently committed nearly $4 million to an ambitious groundwater mapping initiative in southern Alberta, a project that will be crucial for our community’s future.

Water is the lifeblood of our region. From our farming families to our growing urban centres, access to reliable water sources is essential for our prosperity. As our communities continue to expand and evolve, the demand for water has increased substantially, particularly here in southern Alberta. This reality has made it crucial for us to gain a deeper understanding of our groundwater resources.

The Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation study represents a major step forward in water resource management. This comprehensive initiative will employ cutting-edge technology to create detailed hydrogeological mapping and 3D modelling of our aquifers in the South Saskatchewan River and Milk River basins. These sophisticated models will help us visualize and better understand the intricate network of groundwater resources beneath our feet.

What makes this study particularly valuable is its holistic approach. Beyond just mapping water locations, we’ll be able to better understand how increased groundwater usage might affect our surface water and connected ecosystems. This knowledge is crucial for making informed decisions that balance the needs of our communities, businesses, agricultural sector and environment.

I’m particularly proud that this initiative aligns with our committee’s commitment to evidence-based water management. Once completed, these groundwater maps and data will be made available online, ensuring transparency and providing valuable information to stakeholders across our region.

As your representative and someone deeply concerned with water management policy, I understand that every drop counts. This mapping initiative will help us maximize the efficient use of our water resources, supporting our farmers, ranchers, businesses and families while protecting our natural environment for future generations.

Water security is not just about today’s needs – it’s about ensuring our children and grandchildren have access to this vital resource. Through projects like this groundwater mapping initiative, we’re taking proactive steps to understand, protect and sustainably manage our water resources.

I welcome your thoughts and questions about this important project. As always, my office is here to serve you and provide more information about how this initiative will benefit our community.

Together, we’re building a more water-secure future for southern Alberta.

Justin Wright is the MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat

The UCP are doing nothing to protect our water. Allowing harmful open pit coal mining in the Rockies of Alberta sure doesn’t look like it. Resign.

Justin, Justin, Justin…. It’s becoming increasingly obvious of what you really think of us, your constituents, in that you really don’t give a sh*t. On one hand you spout lies, disinformation and show you’re incapable of understanding the issues & impacts around the AER and the lifting of the coal mining moratorium, and on the other hand displaying your ignorance of what the eastern slopes watershed really means to this area of the country. I really think you are out of your depth. Please, please, please educate yourself with facts, truths and information not fed to you by the UCP and stand up for us, your constituents. You have a choice to actually do some good, rather than wait your turn to line your pockets with greasy UCP backer money.

Justin can you prove to us true conservatives that she isn’t making backroom deals with Trump to help Americans cheat Albertans out of billions of more dollars like these Reformers have done by destroying Lougheed’s oil and corporate tax structures starting with Ralph Klein?

What backroom deals were made with the Coal Industry that allowed Lougheed’s protection to be scrapped and what deal was made with the oil industry that allowed them to dump their abandoned oil wells on our farmland and not pay to have them cleaned up like Lougheed and Getty made them do when I was involved with it?

When Lougheed’s energy minister Bill Dickie was a brother in-law of one of my uncles our family got to know a lot of the conservative MLAs and they all taught us to never trust a Reformer and they were absolutely right, so why should we trust Smith or any of you MLAs when we have seen what a disaster you’ve been.

Can you explain why lawyers, accountants, economists, oilmen, bankers and former conservative MLAs that we talk to estimate that Albertans have been cheated out of $1Trillion, and a retired oil executive says it’s likely $1.2 Trillion by slashing Lougheed’s oil and corporate tax structures as this article proves.
“Royalties Down 32% Billions in Federal Revenue Lost”.

I think all of you have a lot of explaining to do to Albertans and all your idiotic comments to try to hide it isn’t impressing any of the true conservatives I know. It’s a well known that Reformers deliberately destroy all the good our conservative heroes have created for the good of the people and that’s exactly what you have done and what your pal Pierre Poilievre is promising to do.
Can you explain why our government debt has recently increased by $8billion or is part of it because of the $4 million you brag about while you continue to give away our oil and corporate taxes? We want to know the truth for a change, don’t you?

One more thing I forgot to mention. Can you explain how Axing the Tax and scrapping the Carbon Tax Rebates that are putting money in the pockets of some who desperately need it is smart when it was conservatives in Alberta who created it to help our oil executives show the world we do care about what Global Warming was doing to the planet and want to help fight it ? Showing no respect to our children or grandchildren who will be forced to deal with it. Where is the intelligence in that?

While oil executives have said it’s the cheapest and most effective way to fight it and 26 other countries agree and have adopted it.
We know we are getting more back in Rebates than we are paying out so why would you want to destroy it?

We know why? It’s another conservative created problem for these Reformers to deal with and they can’t stand it and want to destroy it just like Lougheed’s coal protection and the CBC that was created by conservatives to create jobs and help remote areas of Canada have a connection to the outside world and it’s still needed today but Reformers don’t care do they?

Like praising the criminal convoy truckers and not showing any respect for the people in Ottawa, or the police officers involved, and ignoring the fact that it created a $65 debt for taxpayers proves their is nothing conservative about them, doesn’t it?
