I enjoy living in a small town. I feel the benefits of this living outweigh the benefits of living in a larger centre. It is quiet and peaceful and we have much to offer to the community and those visiting us. In 2023, the population of Redcliff was 5,924 people. What is the attraction for this town known as “The Greenhouse Capital of the Prairies?” I recently volunteered at the Redcliff Public Library this past weekend to help with the annual book sale. I spoke with a family who had moved from B.C. to Redcliff and asked them, why Redcliff? They told me the cost of living was much more affordable, the amenities our town offers and the proximity to a larger centre if needed. What about our amenities? One that sticks out the most for me is the Redcliff Public Library. This small but mighty building is an excellent facility for all ages. Young children can take part in Lego at the Library. Shake, Rattle and Read is another fantastic opportunity to introduce reading to young children. Older patrons who love to knit or crochet can take part in the In-Stitches group. There are computers for use and there are books to check out. The staff are amazing and according to one individual who took the time to compose a letter “They go out of their way to get to know each patron, which enhances everyone’s experiences.” They go on to say, “The library is so much more than a book lending facility, and deserves the funding it requires, to remain the most significant Hub of the Redcliff community, where everyone is welcome.” Other letters of support have been received regarding our library. It truly is a gem in our small town. But like all others, we require the support of our town council to keep the facility running. A recent presentation took place at town council where the library board chair made a presentation and asked the town for an increase in funding to support the programs we offer the community. The last increase the library received was in 2021 for 2.2%, which equated to $4,000. This year they asked for 3.9%, which equates to $7,400. It may not seem like much to some people but to the library, it is a lot. The library will find out in January if the request for additional funding is approved. Fingers crossed they will see the value in what the library means to the community of Redcliff. Have a Meowtastic Day! Linda Tooth is the positive culture co-ordinator at Sanare Centre 10
