MLA Report: Reflections on a year of service: Alberta’s commitment to our military community

As I look back on my first year as Alberta’s Government Military Liaison, I’m filled with a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment. This role has been more than just a position, it’s been a calling to serve those who have served us.

One of the highlights of this year was undoubtedly the Veteran Mental Health Summit held in May. Bringing together over 20 organizations from the veterans sector, with more than 50 participants, this event was a testament to our collective commitment to supporting the mental health of our veterans. The summit fostered meaningful discussions, shared best practices and laid the groundwork for improved coordination in veteran care.

The success of this gathering underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing the complex challenges our veterans face.

Another significant milestone was the introduction of Canadian Armed Forces Day, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of June in perpetuity. This annual recognition is our way of honoring the invaluable contributions of our service members, both past and present. It’s a day for all Albertans to reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals and their families in service of our nation.

Throughout the year, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with several outstanding organizations dedicated to supporting our military community. No Stone Left Alone continues its vital mission of remembering and honoring our fallen, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. Homes for Heroes has made remarkable strides in providing housing and support for homeless veterans, helping them transition successfully to civilian life. The Edmonton Garrison Family Resource Center has been an invaluable partner in supporting the families of our active service members, providing essential resources and community connections.

As I reflect on these achievements, I’m humbled by the trust placed in me with this portfolio. The opportunity to serve as the bridge between our government and the military community is an honor I don’t take lightly. Every day, I’m inspired by the dedication, resilience and sacrifice of our service members, veterans, and their families.

Looking ahead, I’m more committed than ever to doing justice to this role. There’s still much work to be done in ensuring our military community receives the support and recognition they deserve. I pledge to continue listening, learning, and advocating tirelessly on their behalf.

To our service members, veterans, and their families: your service and sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. Alberta stands with you, and I am proud to be your voice in government. Together, we will continue to build a province that truly honors and supports those who have given so much in service of our country.
