MP Report: Throne Speech leaves Canadians wanting

The House of Commons began with the Speech from the Throne where the government traditionally lays out their priorities.

Having just returned from an election where I heard from many in our communities, I listened intently to the Throne Speech hoping to hear about jobs, affordable living, combating excessive inflation and securing the future of Canada. Instead of concentrating on our economy, the Throne Speech offered little more than a doubling down on recycled ideological promises that the Liberals have already failed to deliver.

No government is without mistakes, but the poorly designed legislation and lack of leadership that the Liberals displayed in the last Parliament required a reset of priorities. They had an opportunity to implement ideas proposed by other parties, work together and to strengthen our country, yet chose ignorance or arrogance as they resume this Parliamentary session.

Luckily for Canadians, the Throne Speech is merely an outline. There is still an opportunity for this government to adjust, acknowledge that their approach from the past has not worked and do better. This is where the work of Members of Parliament, such as myself, must win the day. For example:

This Throne Speech mentions resource development and energy, building more products in Canada and leveraging our abundance of natural resources to secure a stronger economy. However, it was this government’s previous legislation that almost completely wiped-out resource development opportunities needed for products like batteries, renewable energy systems, and emission reductions. Canadians support our own clean extraction systems, especially over those from oppressive regimes with lower environmental standards. We need to support lower emission technology and Canada’s low carbon energy sector.

The Throne Speech acknowledged inflation is a challenge, but only as a global issue and not one made worse by their decisions. The Liberals solution is a promise of $10-per-day by 2026. This worthy initiative leaves out parents working shift work, competing for a lack of child-care spaces or those who decide that child-care can be done at home with a parent or family member. We need the government to address child-care for all, as well as all aspects of inflation like escalating gas prices, grocery bills, heating and everyday essentials, to fully serve Canadians

On housing the government’s solution is to add more regulations to the already overbearing legislation of the past. Our housing crisis, amplified from the moment government brought in controls over who can buy their first home, makes it impossible for young families to buy a home without massive savings. We need to continue to hold this government to account to make home ownership affordable for families and afford to stay in the one they own.

Liberals’ plan is to continue dictating to rather than empowering Canadians. The Conservative’s plan will remain focused on holding the Government to account on behalf of Canadians and push for the betterment of our communities.
