If our society doesn’t fight ‘forces of progressive leftist evil’ then evil will win

By Letter to the Editor on January 5th, 2018

I buy The News primarily for the comments section and am regularly entertained and enlightened. I’d like to write about two recent submissions — “Poisonous Partisanship,” a Dec. 2 guest column by Peter Mueller; and “Column personified intolerance” — a rebuttal letter Dec. 12 from Lynn Thacker. I was moved by Mr. Mueller’s words to ... Read More »

Those of Christian faith helped develop Canada

By Letter to the Editor on January 4th, 2018

Canada has many reasons to be proud of its first 150 years. We have achieved advances in intellectual, industrial, economic and other fields. We should remember that the inspiration and hard work behind much of what we value came from the Christian faith of many of our pioneers. Explorers Samuel de Champlain and David Thompson, ... Obeying the Gospel is life changing

By Letter to the Editor on January 2nd, 2018

Re: “Science doesn’t align itself with religion,” Dec. 15 Science is the discovery of what God has created! Could they be any closer aligned? As you say science can be self-testing but so can the Bible, the inspired Word of God. How? Check out the hundreds of prophecies literally fulfilled; for example, Isaiah’s prophecy of ... NDP no longer champions for seniors

By Letter to the Editor on December 29th, 2017

The NDP has been hijacked by special interest groups. They have taken away the non-repayable grants for seniors to repair and stay in their homes, regardless of their income. Yet, you see and hear all the media reports about non-repayable grants to certain projects and friends to their liking. No different than the previous two ... Read More »

Get educated, and eat all the jelly beans

By Letter to the Editor on December 28th, 2017

Re: “Politics 101: Governments should always encourage self-reliance,” Dec. 18 The writer labours under a faulty definition of identity politics. He declares that it is governments that engage in identity politics. Wikipedia declares that “Identity politics are used by minority and civil rights organizations to form a coalition with members of the majority.” The writer ... Read More »

City should get out of the oil and gas business

By Letter to the Editor on December 23rd, 2017

With New Year’s approaching, I would like to suggest that city council make the resolution to form an exit strategy for the oil and gas and utilities divisions. A civic government is not intended to risk taxpayers’ funds on business investments. The petroleum industry is changing rapidly and there are many experienced players exiting the ... Read More »

Great music, great venue, great crowd

By Letter to the Editor on December 22nd, 2017

Kudos to the citizens of Medicine Hat! Last Saturday evening the Medicine Hat Concert Band Society performed its annual Christmas concert to a full house in the Esplanade Theatre. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing the musicians’ hard work and dedication appreciated by an extraordinary crowd. We are so fortunate to have a world ... Read More »

Ticked, Tickled and Truth provides needed balance

By Letter to the Editor on December 22nd, 2017

Thank you for reviving Scott Schmidt’s column “Ticked, Tickled and Truth.” His column provides a balance for and a badly needed rejoinder to the pettiness, ignorance, arrogance and outright hatred we read in some of the Ticked Off submissions. Please have him continue. Gregory R. Cote Irvine... Read More »

We should respect diversity and work together

By Letter to the Editor on December 21st, 2017

As a very proud Albertan, southeastern Albertan, and Medicine Hatter I find it disappointing to read your guest columnist Paul McLennan. He is an armchair political analyst who seems focused on dividing us into categories of left and right. In the past he has focused his disdain on provincial left and centrist politics, now he ... Writer has a political ideology, as most do people

By Letter to the Editor on December 20th, 2017

Re: “Poisonous partisanship at the ballot box,” Dec. 2 I have spent some time reflecting on Peter Mueller’s column. He portrays himself as a political pragmatist. With all due respect I would state that we all have a political view or ideology and that political pragmatism is very rare among the electorate. Perusing this piece ... Read More »

Sniping from the shadows is unacceptable in a democracy

By Letter to the Editor on December 20th, 2017

Ticked Off and Tickled Pink is a weird little column, offering anonymity to all. That is fine for people who want to offer compliments or thanks without seeming to expect recognition themselves. It’s a different matter, however, when it provides a cloak of darkness to malicious individuals and people who have a need to say ... Read More »
