By Letter to the Editor on February 4, 2026.
Dear editor, Having lived/worked in this region of the Prairies all my life and as a descendant of a NWMP/ranching family that arrived in 1884/86, I am “way past tolerant” with the current Alberta sovereignty and separatist rhetoric. In addition to my family helping settle this region, I had a great uncle who survived the horrors of the First World War and an uncle, who died in the Second World War. These men, along with numerous other relatives, friends and neighbours, gave of themselves for the ideals and values of this great country. I now ask myself for what. Only to see a group of entitled, naive, misinformed, band-wagon enthusiasts, determined to embrace an ideology spouted by a leader, whose actual credentials and knowledge too often has been limited to short-term, self-serving political strategy and rhetoric. A leader, who along with her minions, is planting the seeds of fear, anxiety and doubt in its population rather than inspiration and hope. A leader who, along with her advisers, curries favour from the despot(s) to the south and actively works toward dismantling our health-care and education systems, who covets “my pension”, who touts a “sovereign” Alberta, which in turns encourages separatist rhetoric. Personally, I am disgusted with the recent seditious behaviour of some of her followers and vehemently oppose any attempts to align ourselves with the demagogs to the south and exhort the present UCP government to keep their hands off my pension, respect our province and our country, and focus as much attention into making the present system work as they do to tearing it apart. Quit whining and celebrate how fortunate we are to live in this great country. A country the rest of the world by any measure envies. Donny White Medicine Hat 9
Great letter Donny. I completely agree!
My senior friends and I blame our mindless fellow seniors for allowing this to happen, believing every lie these Reformers feed them and hurling their sarcastic comments at us for not being as stupid as them.
Donny I come from a extremely strong conservative family whose late parents and two sisters spent countless hours volunteering for the Lougheed and Getty governments. A brother in-law voluntarily flew the government plane for them in his spare time, never got paid a dime. Lougheed’s energy minister Bill Dickie was a brother in-law of one of my uncles and dad donated around $30,000. to the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party over the years.
Now we see these gullible fellow seniors believing every lie these fake conservatives, Reformers, feed them and hurl their sarcastic comments at us for not being as stupid as them, while they ignore the “Horrific Financial Mess” as Lougheed called it that they have helped them create for our children and grandchildren’s future. That’s how stupid they are.
Like you we find it sickening what these mindless seniors have helped these Reformers do to us and the lack of respect they have shown their children and grandchildren, along with ours is pure stupidity, isn’t it?
As a former bank manager I see nothing smart about separating from Canada and every lawyer, accountant, economist, oilman, fellow banker, and former MLA we talk to agrees.
The addition costs for a privatized healthcare system, private police force and education system for their children to deal with, will bankrupt a lot of these same seniors who are hellbent on separation. That’s how stupid they are.
Not to mention the fact that lawyers warn when Smith gets control of their Canada Pension Plans she could use the excuse that we have received more than what we paid into it and scrap them. How many of these seniors are dumb enough to want to risk that?
While these Reformers, treasure Nate Horner, are once again whining about how poor we are and we can expect cut backs, those of us who had ties to the oil industry aren’t that stupid we know that if these fools hadn’t deliberately destroyed Lougheed’s oil royalties and corporate tax structures to help their rich friends we wouldn’t have lost $1.2 trillion and be in this financial mess. Alaska and Norway didn’t and look at the wealth they have accumulated with $80 billion in their Savings Account and every man, woman and child has received some $52,000. each since 1982.
Albertans got a pathetic $1,000. Norway has $2 trillion in their savings account, that’s how stupid we are for allowing us to be treated like morons.
It’s a well known fact that Reformers are hellbent on destroying everything our Conservative heroes created for the good of the people and putting us in financial ruin is no surprise.
Isn’t it too bad these ignorant seniors refused to listen to us and not vote them in. You can’t tell these fools anything they are so much smarter than us. The protection they took off our mountains, that Lougheed put on to protect us has already cost us $238 million with another $10 billion still to be paid thanks to these mindless seniors who think they are a lot smarter than us that’s how stupid they are, isn’t it?
Like Donny they make us fellow seniors sick at how stupid they are, don’t they you?
I told 6 of them in 2003 that maybe they should run to the nearest wall, as fast as they could, and smash their heads on it, as hard as they can to see if they could jumpstart their brains because they aren’t working.
These fools claimed the Ralph Klein was the greatest premier Canada has ever seen, yet when I asked what he had done for them to make them feel that way there only answer was oh Lots of Things. They couldn’t even give me one, that’s how stupid they were, and nothings changed they still are. I had known Klein since I was 17 years old and knew what an idiot he was, even members of his own family refused to support him.
Lining up to separate us from Canada without a clue as it what it will cost them, that’s how stupid they are, isn’t it? As a lawyer friend has said over the years Sadly Their Stupidity Effects Us All and We Can Do Nothing About It.
