Letter: We are all Canadians

By Letter to the Editor on January 15, 2026.

Dear editor,

“Canada is a Country of Immigrants,” that is what my father always said to me.

Canada is rich because of it. My family on my father’s side were refugees from the United States of America and came in 1778. They were United Empire Loyalists.

They fought against the Americans in the Loyalist War and the 1812 War. My grandfather on my mother’s side helped a lot of Eastern Europeans come over after the Second World War.

Immigrants work hard and are good for our economy. If you are not Indigenous somewhere in your background you have a relative who was an immigrant.

We should welcome immigrants into our neighbourhoods, into our cities because they are fleeing terrible conditions. These people want better things for themselves and their families. Our ancestors wanted those things, too, and that is why we live in this beautiful country of ours.

I know we have a housing crisis, but there are still jobs people can do that some Canadians do not want to do. I know the universities still need foreign students to pay higher tuition to keep those institutions going. We cannot judge people just because they have been in Canada for a shorter time than we have. We are all Canadians.

It’s great when they come here, work hard and assimilate like your ancestors did, but when they come expecting to get everything handed to them then they are not wanted.

I agree with you but why Is it okay for these Reformers to create a $90 billion debt, a $260 billion oil well cleanup mess, a $30 million deficit to cover road and bridge repairs, along with construction of 60 new schools we desperately need. While they deliberately destroyed protection on our mountains and settling lawsuits has cost us $238 million with another $10 billion yet to be paid.
While Albertans aren’t smart enough to put a stop to it, they want to leave Canada and separate without taking the horrible financial mess the will face that’s how stupid they are isn’t.
Watching the gong show in Red Deer last night once again it’s mainly gullible seniors believing ever lie they are fed.

Apparently the 4 who don’t agree with me are seniors who don’t care what these Reformers do to their children and grandchildren’s future. They don’t care that separation will bring privatization of healthcare and education, kicking out of the RCMP and eliminating federal government funding will add thousands to small towns property tax’s and as lawyers warn once they gain control of our Canada Pension Plans there is nothing stopping them from scrapping them by using the excuse that we have already received more than we paid into them which we know we have.
My American Relatives point out that an average family of 4 is paying $43,000. per year or their healthcare. The Albertans I helped pay for private education were paying $1,000. per month per student. Add in the loss of your Canada Pension Funds and there will be a lot more seniors needing help at the Food Banks and your children aren’t going to able to afford to help you, where is the intelligence of allowing that to happen?
After spending 32 years in the world of finance with ties to the oil industry I know we won’t be a lot better off like these Reformers want you to believe and you would be fools to believe it.
