Letter: Do separatists believe an independent Alberta would remain free for long?

Dear editor, Canvassers are now collecting signatures so Albertans can vote in a referendum on Albertan independence. I hope they and the people who sign are not naive enough to believe an Alberta nation would remain independent and free for more than a short while. In December, the U.S. published its National Security Strategy – where the U.S. is “going to protect our homeland and our access to key geographies throughout the region.” This strategy provides the rationale for their actions in Venezuela, where they will now get what Americans consider “their” oil, and their threats to take over Greenland and Cuba. It also provides a rationale for taking control over Alberta. There would be nothing that could stop them from doing so and there are a number of reasons they could use to justify taking over the new country – the easiest being the instability created by those opposed to its separation from Canada. Taking control means removing rights and freedoms that Albertans now have and assuming ownership of all natural resources and revenue generated from their development. It is highly likely that prisons and hospitals would be sold to U.S. companies. I invite anyone who disagrees with the above to offer a rebuttal, providing reasons as to why this assessment is incorrect, or why it would be a good thing to give up our rights so the U.S. can control our lives and our resources. While Danielle Smith and the fools who support her aren’t willing to accept the surveys that were done, that’s how stupid they are isn’t it.
After all the comments about how dangerous the coal mining stupidity could be they are still advertising Grassy Mountain.
Not only have the lawsuits cost taxpayers $238 million there is still $10 billion to be settled because of what these Reformers have deliberately done to us.
Ed, you should have done a little more research on the reason the US got Maderno out of Venezuelan. It had to do with China,Russia and Iran having a base of operations in the western hemisphere. The part with oil was to stop Venezuelan from selling oil to bad actors. You need to stop watching CNN, CBC and CTV. You’re spouting exactly what they want you to believe. Not necessarily what is true.
